Producten uit de spanningsreferentiefamilie worden gebruikt om een elektrische potentiaal met een stabiele, gevestigde waarde af te leiden uit een bron met een onzekerder karakter, voor gebruik als vergelijkingsstandaard bij metingen, controle en soortgelijke toepassingen. Hoewel hun functionele gedrag vergelijkbaar kan zijn met dat van lineaire spanningsregelaars die worden gebruikt voor bulkvermogensregulering, zijn spanningsreferentieapparaten niet geschikt voor gebruik als zodanig; hun prestaties als vergelijkingsstandaard hebben over het algemeen een omgekeerde relatie met de toenemende uitgangsstroomcapaciteit of de werkelijke stroom die door een belasting wordt getrokken.
