Het typische bedieningsconcept omvat het gebruik van seriële communicatie, waarbij slechts een paar I/O-lijnen op het hostapparaat nodig zijn om de status van veel invoer-/uitvoerpinnen op het uitbreidingsapparaat te lezen/schrijven. De techniek wisselt communicatiesnelheid uit voor betere connectiviteit en is het meest geschikt voor toepassingen waarbij snelle respons niet cruciaal is, zoals bij veel menselijke interfacetoepassingen.
