Op thyristor gebaseerde Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS)-apparaten zijn overspanningsbeveiligingsapparaten die onder normale bedrijfsomstandigheden een open circuit benaderen. Het aanleggen van een spanning over hen die een bepaalde waarde overschrijdt, de zogenaamde doorslagspanning, zorgt ervoor dat ze in een geleidende toestand terechtkomen die een kortsluiting benadert. Deze toestand blijft bestaan totdat de stroom door het apparaat door een invloed van buitenaf binnen het circuit wordt verlaagd tot onder een minimumwaarde die "houdstroom" wordt genoemd.
