Lineaire spanningsregelaars, waaronder LDO-types (Low Drop Out), worden gebruikt om een stabiele uitgangsspanning te leveren die nominaal invariant is met betrekking tot veranderingen in belastingsstroom, ingangsspanning of omgevingsfactoren. Hun werkingsprincipe vereist dat de ingangsspanning met een bepaald minimum boven de gewenste uitgangsspanning wordt gehouden, en functioneert op basis van het omzetten van de overtollige spanning die aanwezig is aan de ingang in warmte. Hoewel ze hierdoor voor de meeste toepassingen minder efficiënt zijn dan schakelende spanningsregelaars, zijn ze vaak beter geschikt voor toepassingen met een hoge gevoeligheid voor ruis.
