Thyristors geleiden AC (wisselstroom) in één richting of in de helft van een AC-cyclus. Een TRIAC (triode AC) geleidt stroom in beide richtingen wanneer de poort wordt geactiveerd. Andere namen zijn onder meer bidirectionele triode-thyristor of bilaterale triode-thyristor. TRIAC-typen zijn snubberloos, alternistor, intern getriggerd, logische poort en standaard, met chassis-, oppervlakte- of doorvoermontage. De selectie vindt plaats op basis van de uit-toestandsspanning, de aan-toestandsstroom, de houdstroom en de poorttriggerspanning.
