Junction gate field-effect transistors (JFET) zijn apparaten die worden gebruikt als elektronisch gestuurde schakelaars, versterkers of spanningsgestuurde weerstanden. Een potentiaalverschil met de juiste polariteit dat wordt aangelegd tussen de gate- en source-terminals verhoogt de weerstand tegen de stroom, wat betekent dat er minder stroom zal vloeien in het kanaal tussen de source- en drain-terminals. JFET's hebben geen voorspanningsstroom nodig vanwege een lading die door een halfgeleidend kanaal tussen source- en drainterminals stroomt.
