Het apparaat werkt door een opening te creëren in een materiaal dat zich tussen twee eindaansluitingen bevindt. Het materiaal zal smelten (blazen) door een toename van de warmte die door het apparaat wordt gegenereerd naarmate de stroom verandert. De hoeveelheid tijd die het apparaat nodig heeft om op te blazen, wordt vaak gedefinieerd als snel of langzaam.
