Producten uit de fototransistorfamilie zijn discrete lichtgevoelige componenten die zich op dezelfde manier gedragen als een bipolaire transistor, maar gebruik maken van invallend licht in plaats van een elektrische stroom die via een apparaataansluiting wordt aangelegd om het apparaat te laten geleiden. Vergeleken met fotodiodes produceren fototransistors over het algemeen een veel grotere uitgangsstroom voor dezelfde intensiteit van invallend licht, hoewel ze langzamer reageren op veranderingen in de lichtintensiteit. Deze verschillen zorgen ervoor dat fototransistoren eenvoudiger toe te passen zijn, maar minder bruikbaar voor werking op hoge snelheid.
