Producten uit de familie van optische bewegingssensoren gebruiken licht (meestal infrarood) om objectbewegingen te detecteren. Passieve infraroodtypen detecteren veranderingen in de hoeveelheid infraroodlicht die op de sensor valt, bijvoorbeeld veroorzaakt door een warm lichaam dat door hun gezichtsveld gaat, terwijl gebiedsreflecterende typen licht uitstralen en veranderingen detecteren in de hoeveelheid die wordt gereflecteerd door nabijgelegen objecten.
