Transistor- of fotovoltaïsche opto-isolatoren gebruiken licht om informatie over een elektrische isolatiebarrière te verzenden, meestal om veiligheids- of functionele redenen. Ze onderscheiden zich van andere typen opto-isolatoren door het gebruik van een eenvoudige fototransistor of fotovoltaïsche cel (zonnecel) als uitvoerapparaat. De uitgangen van deze apparaten hebben voor de werking geen externe voedingsbron nodig en zijn analoog van karakter, waardoor ze kunnen worden gebruikt voor het verzenden van analoge informatie tussen circuits die niet elektrisch kunnen worden aangesloten.
