CPLD's zijn door de gebruiker configureerbare geïntegreerde circuitproducten die worden gebruikt voor het uitvoeren van logische bewerkingen en informatieverwerking, en die een hoger niveau van functionaliteit bevatten (dwz meer logische poorten) dan kenmerkend is voor PLD- of PAL-apparaten, hoewel minder dan dat van FPGA's. Kenmerkend is dat CPLD's een niet-vluchtig configuratiegeheugen bevatten dat de opslag en het behoud van de gewenste configuratie van de gebruiker rechtstreeks op het apparaat mogelijk maakt, waarbij deze informatie behouden blijft wanneer de stroom naar het apparaat wordt uitgeschakeld.
