Modulaire kabelassemblages bestaan uit een stuk geschikt touw, afgesloten met een soort verbindingsproduct dat bekend staat als een "modulaire connector". Modulaire kabels worden vaak gebruikt in telecommunicatietoepassingen zoals bekabelde Ethernet- en telefoonnetwerken en kunnen grofweg in twee klassen worden verdeeld op basis van hun gebruik van platte of ronde kabeltypen. Platte modulaire kabels bieden gemakkelijke aansluiting ten koste van de elektrische prestaties en worden gebruikt in toepassingen met lage snelheid, zoals basisbandspraakcommunicatie; terwijl ronde kabels (waarvan de binnengeleiders in paren zijn gedraaid) kunnen worden gebruikt voor hogesnelheidstoepassingen zoals gigabit Ethernet.
